How to Read your Frames?
How do you measure your eyeglasses' size? If you take a look at the inside of your current pair of you glasses, you may notice 3 sets of numbers. Sometimes it is found on the arms (temple bar) or on the bridge (the part that goes over your nose). Those sets of numbers are your glasses frame's measurements. The first number is your lens width. The second number is the bridge measurement. The third number is the temple bar length.
Sometimes, from normal wear and tear, the numbers have rubbed off. You can measure your current glasses size to figure out its dimensions.
First you would measure the lens width. Lens width is the horizontal width of each lens at its widest point. It typically ranges from 40mm-62mm. If you are sporting an aviator, the lens width may be larger than 60mm and that's ok!
You would then move onto the bridge width. This is the distance between your two lenses. In short, the bridge width is the space where your frames fit against your nose. The size can range from 14mm to 24mm.
Next is the temple (arm) length. This is the length of the temple bar from the screw to its temple tip. This includes the bend that sits behind your ear. This measurement can range from 120mm to 150mm long.
Lastly, if you are going to be needing a bifocal or progressive lens, you would need to measure the lens height. This is the vertical height of the lenses at the widest point of the lens within the frame. If the lens height is less than 30mm, it is not an ideal frame to use for progressive lenses.
A FEW HELPFUL TIPS FOR MEASURING YOUR FRAME
Frame Width
A frame that is too narrow will make your face look wider, while a frame that is too wide will make your face look narrower. Typically, this is the most important factor in finding a pair of glasses that fits well.
To find frame width, measure the front of the frame from screw to screw.
Temple Length
Temple length is the measurement in millimeters of the ‘arms' of the frame. This measurement does not vary as much as the others, with 135mm, 140mm, 145mm, and 150mm being the most common options.
To find temple length, measure one from screw to tip.
Lens Height and Width
Lens height is the distance from the top of a lens to the bottom. Lens Width is the distance from the left side of a lens to the right side.
To find lens height and width, measure the widest or longest parts of the lens.
Bridge Width
The distance between two lenses equals a frame's bridge width. If you have close-set eyes or want a narrow bridge, this number should be lower. If you have wide-set eyes or want a wide bridge, this number should be higher.
To find bridge width, measure the distance between the inner edges of each lens.
